La Recoleta de El Tejar se fundó en el siglo XVII como un espacio de retiro franciscano en las afueras de Quito. Su origen estuvo ligado al espíritu de vida contemplativa y a la necesidad de contar con un lugar apartado, destinado a la oración y la penitencia. El sitio se consolidó con donaciones de tierras y apoyo del Cabildo, lo que permitió edificar un conjunto arquitectónico autónomo y silencioso, rodeado de naturaleza y recogimiento.
Con el paso del tiempo, el complejo adoptó la fisonomía de una construcción sobria, con iglesia de una sola nave, claustros pequeños y dependencias sencillas que respondían a la vida austera de los recoletos. En su interior destacaron retablos de estilo barroco quiteño y obras de devoción popular. Al igual que otros conventos de la ciudad, El Tejar guarda leyendas y relatos vinculados a su historia, lo que lo convierte en un referente tanto espiritual como cultural en la memoria de Quito.

The El Tejar Retreat was founded in the 17th century as a Franciscan retreat on the outskirts of Quito. Its origins were linked to the spirit of contemplative life and the need for a secluded place for prayer and penance. The site was consolidated with land donations and support from the City Council, which allowed for the construction of an autonomous and quiet architectural complex, surrounded by nature and contemplation.
Over time, the complex took on the appearance of a sober building, with a single-nave church, small cloisters, and simple rooms that reflected the austere life of the Retreats. Its interior featured altarpieces in the Quito Baroque style and works of popular devotion. Like other convents in the city, El Tejar preserves legends and stories linked to its history, making it a spiritual and cultural landmark in the memory of Quito.
